TSA confiscates heavily-armed soldiers' nail-clippers

Here's an anonymous account of a US Army soldier returning from Afghanistan who watched as his buddies -- who were all carrying high-powered rifles, pistols, etc -- were forced to surrender their nail-clippers and multi-tools:
So we're in line, going through one at a time. One of our Soldiers had his Gerber multi-tool. TSA confiscated it. Kind of ridiculous, but it gets better. A few minutes later, a guy empties his pockets and has a pair of nail clippers. Nail clippers. TSA informs the Soldier that they're going to confiscate his nail clippers. The conversation went something like this:

TSA Guy: You can't take those on the plane.

Soldier: What? I've had them since we left country.

TSA Guy: You're not suppose to have them.

Soldier: Why?

TSA Guy: They can be used as a weapon.

Soldier: [touches butt stock of the rifle] But this actually is a weapon. And I'm allowed to take it on.

TSA Guy: Yeah but you can't use it to take over the plane. You don't have bullets.

Soldier: And I can take over the plane with nail clippers?

TSA Guy: [awkward silence]

Me: Dude, just give him your damn nail clippers so we can get the f**k out of here. I'll buy you a new set.

Soldier: [hands nail clippers to TSA guy, makes it through security]

This might be a good time to remind everyone that approximately 233 people re-boarded that plane with assault rifles, pistols, and machine guns-but nothing that could have been used as a weapon.

Another TSA Outrage

A 67-year-old man in rural Wisconsin grabbed his shotgun and blasted his TV after witnessing Bristol Palin's dance performance on "Dancing with the Stars." Everyone's a critic. The shooting resulted in an all-night SWAT team standoff.(Submitterator, thanks theatrechik77)

Turkeycake

Yup, this is a Thanksgiving Turkey Cake Recipe.

Ground turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes comprise the layers, and it's frosted with mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, and toasted marshmallows.

Writes Chow: "Whether this Thanksgiving centerpiece incites horror, amazement, or confusion when it's served, it's certain to evoke some kind of outburst."

Or upchuck.

Ian McKellen On Closeted Hollywood Stars

Ian McKellen, who has been out since he was 49, has always had a lot to say about being openly gay in Hollywood. He tells Popeater:

Ian "I don't think any gay person is going to be happy and bring joy to themselves and other people unless they can be honest about their sexuality, and if other people don't like that honestly, that's a comment on them and not on the person who is being honest. That might seem a harsh thing to say to a young actor who is being advised by an agent to stay in the closet. There are no openly gay stars in Hollywood, so someone is telling them to shut up."

He adds: "If you're going around telling a lie you may get by but you won't be half as happy as you would be if you came out. If that means you have to give up hopes of being one of the three or four young sex symbols in Hollywood so be it. You probably weren't going to be one of those anyway. That happens by chance and it doesn't last for very long. There is a difference between living a private life and being in the closet. Being in the closet means you're lying about your life but just because you come out doesn't mean you have to talk about every affair you have. You don't have to talk about what you do in bed anymore than I have to talk about the food I eat."

Tunnel People

According to the Daily Mail there are 1,000 people living in makeshift homes in flooded tunnels underneath Las Vegas.

They have been there for five years, fashioning a shower out of a water cooler, hanging paintings on the walls and collating a library from abandoned books.

Their possessions, however, are carefully placed in plastic crates to stop them getting soaked by the noxious water pooling on the floor.

Boing Boing Exclusive: Apple iBox prototype left in laundromat

Via the BB Submitterator, Boing Boing reader Agger (we slipped him $5,000 in crocheted Steampunk funny money for the leak) reports,

Someone accidentally left this prototype of the new Mac iBox in a laundromat in Italy. What to expect: "The interfaces are fairly intuitive, with a variety of mark-generation potential. Problems: The hue range is limited. The receptive surfaces will be sold separately by third party vendors. And the the gray undo tool isn't compatible with all the rendering devices."
