The Santa Barbara Zoo's Otter pups we featured in September are nearly ready to go on exhibit (a November debut is still to be announced). Now, with their tiny claws emerging and fully-opened eyes, they begin to look like mini versions of their parents. Asian Small-Clawed Otters, during the first months of their lives, are taught to swim by their parents in shallow water. At this stage, they stay close to their parents and spend a lot of time huddling together in their den. In the wild, this species is threatened by habitat loss, hunting, and pollution.
